Is Spain the next big market for energy storage? The Spanish government certainly thinks so.
In its Energy Storage Strategy, the government has set a target of 20 GW of energy storage by 2030. Considering that there are already 8 GW installed, this translates into 1.5 GW of energy storage deployments every year over the next eight years.
To kickstart storage deployments in Spain, the government has created the €600+ million PERTE funds. Storage will also be able to tap into other sources of public funding, such as the €300+ million made available through the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF).
International energy price trends could also favor energy storage deployments. Given that Spain depends heavily on energy imports (75% of its energy sources are imported), high fossil fuel prices in international markets could accelerate the transition to renewables and storage.
However, energy storage developers face hurdles such as disrupted logistics and higher battery costs. On the regulatory front, Spanish permitting laws on energy storage seem to be less than clear cut, creating uncertainty for project developers.
It is clear that the energy storage business in Spain faces hurdles but could also represent a very lucrative opportunity for first movers.
